The correlation between stressful jobs and divorce

Some Minnesota couples may work in professions that make them more vulnerable to divorce. A study that used census data to examine careers and the likelihood of divorce by the age of 30, the average divorce age, found that of the top 10 jobs that have the highest correlation with divorce rates, three are in the military. Factors such as psychological stress, including depression and post-traumatic stress disorder, along with moving frequently and deployments were among the reasons cited for the higher rate of military divorces.

First-line enlisted military supervisors, a job that involves coordinating and leading operations, was the profession with the highest divorce rate. It was followed by jobs including mechanics and automotive service technicians. Air weapons and tactical operations were the other two military jobs that appeared in the top 10.

Around 41 percent of first marriages will result in divorce, but divorce has been on the decline since it reached a peak in 1980 of 23 divorces for every 1,000 married women. By 2016, it had dropped to 16.9 divorces for every 1,000 married women. However, baby boomers are continuing to divorce at a high rate in part because of living longer and less stigma attached to divorce. These divorces later in life can leave people in financially unstable situations.

As difficult as divorce may be, it can be important for people to keep their financial well-being in mind during the divorce process. For example, people should consider the cost of keeping a home or what a retirement account or investments are likely to be worth over time. If the person is negotiating the divorce settlement with the other spouse, an attorney might be able to help prevent the person from rushing into decisions because they want the divorce over with quickly.
