Minnesota residents who enjoy reading celebrity news may be interested to learn that Cuba Gooding Jr. filed for divorce from his wife, Sara Kapfer, of 20 years. The two were married in 1994 and have three children together, including a 10-year-old child.
Kapfer had initially filed for separation in 2014, citing irreconcilable differences. The 49-year-old actor reportedly requested joint legal custody of their 10-year-old daughter and has already stated that he was willing to pay spousal support. However, he was asking the court to keep the income he has earned since his former spouse filed for separation. In March 2016, Gooding Jr. had hinted that he was potentially attempting to reconcile with his wife.
Deciding to get a divorce, especially if the former couple has been together for a long time, can be difficult. Depending on the circumstances surrounding the divorce and the assets that were acquired during the marriage, former couples may have to determine how to divide up the home, vehicles and certain financial assets. Additionally, they may have to determine where any minor children will live and if one or both parents will have legal custody of them.
If the estranged couple is unable to come to an agreement regarding one or more of the applicable divorce legal issues, there are some other options that they may want to consider. Their respective family law attorneys could attempt to negotiate an accord, or the attorneys may suggest mediation as an alternative to having a judge make these decisions.
