First comes love, then comes marriage, then comes…divorce?

When two people get married, it is not unusual for them to hope for a fairytale relationship and lifetime of happiness. After all, that’s what love songs promise and movies show us, right? But as many Minnesota couples have learned, the reality of marriage is that it is difficult and there are some relationships that do not last a lifetime.

That is the message that actress Gwyneth Paltrow is sharing after announcing that she and her husband, Coldplay front man Chris Martin, are ending their relationship. The couple have been married for 11 years, have two children together and they seemed to be the perfect Hollywood family. Unfortunately, like so many other couples who deal with the difficult challenges of marriage, Paltrow and Martin have made the decision that their marriage cannot be repaired.

People do not have to be famous actresses or world-renowned musicians to experience the challenges of marriage. It can be enormously challenging to try and pursue any career and keep a balance at home without one or the other suffering. Having kids can also put strain on a relationship, as it requires spouses to play different roles and reassess their priorities. Of course being in the spotlight can also push a relationship past its breaking point when one or both people are under the social microscope.

No matter what factors contribute to the strain of a relationship, the truth is that they can be too difficult to overcome. If and when this happens, it can be very helpful to speak with an attorney in order to begin the divorce process. Taking this step can be difficult, but having the support of someone familiar with the process can make it just a little easier.
