Divorced basketball stars spar over child support

Raising children with serious health problems is stressful and expensive enough when the parents are living together and sharing in the work. When the parents are separated or divorced, it must be doubly difficult, though of course most parents do everything they can to get sick or disabled kids the medical care and support they need.

Professional basketball stars Brittney Griner and Glory Johnson, who were briefly married in 2015, have a pair of twin daughters together. Johnson became pregnant with them via in-vitro fertilization while still married to Griner. The marriage was short and tempestuous, and recently the two were in court over how much Griner should pay Johnson in child support.

According to Azcentral.com, the infants were born after just five months in the womb and have serious health problems. One of the girls stopped breathing for 6 minutes the day after they were born, and the other had to undergo eye surgery. Both have had bleeding on the brain and required heart surgery.

The children are home from the hospital, but need daily physical therapy and regular doctor visits, Johnson told the judge via telephone at an Apr. 14 hearing. She is seeking $6,000 a month in child support.

Since the girls were born, Griner has paid $2,665.81 in support. She testified that she believes the proposed increase is unreasonable, and that she does not trust Johnson’s contentions about the girls’ health. She noted that after Johnson claimed the girls could not go outside, Johnson posted a photo on social media of the infants at a basketball game. Griner also accused Johnson of being evasive with medical records.

At the end of the hearing, the judge actually reduced the child support order slightly, with an official ruling expected in a week or so.
