Tallying to costs of marriage and divorce

They say money makes the world go ‘round, but most people would say they got married for love, not the prospect of wealth. Still, it is vital that a married couple be able to support themselves, and money problems are a reason many people cite for their decision to get divorced.

Before marriage and divorce, there is dating, which can cost quite a bit. Recently, Minnesota Public Radio shared some facts about the cost of love, and when love fades.

How much a date costs depends a lot on where you live. Surprisingly, the most expensive city to go on a date is not New York, which was second at $76.15. The priciest spot was Austin, Texas, where an average date costs $81.42.

It appears that traditional gender dynamics are still common. Most men spend more than $50 on a date, while women were three times more likely to spend $25 or less. This is somewhat misleading, though, because nearly two-thirds of women reported spending more than $50 on clothing or grooming before the date.

Eventually, dating develops into a relationship, and, perhaps, marriage. Weddings are more expensive than ever in the U.S., costing an average of $31,213 in 2014. Booking the venue is the single biggest cost. Again, the cost in Minnesota is likely less than in places like New York.

Finally, if the marriage ends in divorce, the costs can be significant. MPR says it can cost $15-20,000, depending on how contentious the divorce turns out to be. Of course, with the help of the right divorce lawyer, it is possible to save considerable expense, as well as time and heartache.
