Minnesota Senate considers requiring 4-hour divorce class

Some Minnesota lawmakers want to make sure married couples are educated about how divorce works in the state before they can undergo the process. A bill to require most parents to take a four-hour marriage dissolution class before their divorce can proceed has been introduced in the state Senate.

This is not the first time legislators have tried to establish divorce classes in Minnesota. One of the bill’s sponsors, Sen. John Marty, says that problems with past bills have been fixed. The bill has bipartisan support in the state Senate.

The proposed course is intended to teach parents considering divorce about planning for the financial and child custody implications of that decision. Reducing divorce may be a goal for many of the bill’s sponsors; Marty said that going through the course could convince some couples to try to fix their marriage.

However, Marty emphasized that he is not looking to make getting divorced more difficult in Minnesota. He said judges would be left with some discretion to waive the requirement, in whole or in part.

If this bill passes, it could significantly change the timeline and requirements of a successful divorce. We will keep an eye on this bill’s progress and update our readers when there is something new to report.

Having a clear picture of the impact getting divorced will have on your wallet, your time and your ability to see your children is important. One way to figure this out is with the aid of a knowledgeable family law attorney.
