Can divorce be predicted before the marriage?

Sometimes, people who file for divorce say that their spouse has changed and is no longer the person they married. That could be true to some extent, but often the reality is, the spouse’s faults were there when the couple got married. Perhaps they got worse over time, but many times the seeds of a divorce were planted by the wedding day.

This could be food for thought for people getting married soon, or considering proposing to their special someone. Though no person or relationship is perfect, ignoring these potential red flags could lead to divorce down the line:

  • Different values. No two people view the world the same way. But fundamental disagreements about what is important in life, how to raise children and so on, can eventually make it impossible for the marriage to continue.
  • Lack of respect. A spouse who does not treat others with respect could end up treating you the same way, especially once the excitement of the newness of the relationship wears off.
  • Expecting your spouse to “complete” you. It is unrealistic and unfair to hope getting married will fill some void in your life. Instead, love should be the reason the two of you want to get married.
  • Money. This does not mean financial problems per se, more like a person who cannot talk about money or deal with tough times. Lack of openness about money could lead to deception and serious problems someday. At that point, your economic fate will be strongly tied to your spouse’s.
